Community Spaces

There are a number of 'community' venues or spaces in Edinburgh that are currently at risk of being given over to housing development (e.g. The George Portobello, London Road Church, Community Centre on Montgomery Street). I think that a person's cultural development starts at the local level. Those kind of community spaces are oftens the first place where kids gets to take part in community or cultural events. If there is not an obvious, local community space with associated cultural programme I fear that young people wont be have a place to congregate outwith their increasingly virtual world, AND I think that the lack of exeposure to culture - no matter what form that might take - at an early age will be detrimental to their a young person's personal growth.

Why the contribution is important

We have a responsibility as a country to provide relevant cultural venues and programmes at the local level for young people. They are the audiences and practitioners of the future, and the broader viewpoint that a child is given, the more rounded an adult they will become!
