Listen to the science

More scientists are stating that lockdown isn’t the way forward. Herd immunity is. Shield the vulnerable and let the population who are less affected by the virus build herd immunity. This week 3 scientists, Prof Martin Kulldorf (Harvard University), Prof Sunetra Gupta (Oxford University) and Prof Jay Bhattucharya (Stanford University) came together to talk about alternative to lockdowns. The government is stating that it listens to ‘the science’ - and these three (and many more who were initially being silenced on social media and other platforms) are proving context, a wider picture, instead of focusing on just the virus and it’s elimination. The current approach doesn’t make sense to me based on what these scientists say. I personally feel that the media have provided a relentless campaign of fear, zero context and partial facts. You say you listen to the science - please listen to the science as they are sending a very clear message.

    Entirely agree. Shield and support the vulnerable end let everyone else get on with their lives. And if some of the vulnerable don’t want to shield that’s fine with me too. It’s their choice after all.

    Listen to Devi Sridhar who one of the most respected scientific advisers in the UK. She is warning against this strategy and describes it as a "minority view". Herd immunity can only work with a vaccine. There is no proven immunity when contracting Covid and some think it may only last for a short time at best. Very disingenous to talk about listening to science if you are only considering fringe views that have been debunked by everyone else.

    Would that be the same Devi Sridhar that says “lockdowns are not the answer”? Ignoring other scientific opinions because you believe they are a minority view is not good science. The first lockdown achieved its intended purpose of flattening the curve of death, now lets deploy a more relevant approach as we learn to coexist with this virus.

    I agree we need to really listen to the science. We know so much more about this virus and the highest and risk and as time goes on we learn more about currently available medications to treat this. We cannot rely on a vaccine solving all the issues here as the flu one certainly hasn't eradicated that and it's a risk for many including children. A balanced approach is essential for the overall health and prosperity of the nation. As an added point, Really don't understand why our borders were opened
