Shielding the Vulnerable a proposal to arrest deaths

There is a distinction between infection and its consequences. The vulnerable die viz the elderly or those with underlying health problems . The rest, the overwhelming majority survive. The data supports that. Action shield those with vulnerability for two weeks providing supports . Family can visit stand in the doorway, outside the window, in the garden with Grandma and Grandpa in side. Use Skype, use the phone use Home care to facilitate etc. Let the rest work, train using social distancing and other measures preventing transmission. If not a full lockdown is inevitable with all of us shielding except key services. The economy will collapse..No NHS, no public services but great strife. Shield the vulnerable now they won't die of Covid and neither will the rest of the population.

Why the contribution is important

It would minimise deaths the key concern and allow the economy to develop creating necessary funds to maintain the NHS and public services. It would prevent a comprehensive lockdown and ensure we could meet any necessary covid treatment, hospital admissions and re establish addressing the backlog of operations outstanding and other needed displaced interventions.

If you try to shut grandparents indoors, this grandparent for one would see no point in living anymore. It's only by walking at least 5 miles a day and being able to hug my grandchildren that I can keep relatively sane.
Grandchildren need to be able to hug their grandparents. Our grandson was very distressed when he couldn't hug us.

I agree with the shielding approach but it should not be mandatory. People wanting to shield should be fully supported but those that don’t should be allowed to get on with their lives (and accept any ensuing consequences). After all, rock climbing is a very dangerous sport but we don’t remove people’s choice to do it just because they may end up in ICU or worse still, die.

Being "elderly" does not necessarily mean "vulnerable". Be careful.how you define vulnerable. Also vulnerable to what? COVID-19. isolation makes humans vulnerable to mental and emotional illness which can be just as deadly and take up a lot of NHS resources.

This is not workable. The vulnerable eg those with diabetes work in essential services eg education and nhs. Asking them all to stay at home is neither fair or workable.

This is a well meaning fantasy. I’m a shielder. I’ve also got two primary age kids. Are they supposed to live in the garden while I’m in the house?! And by the way my underlying condition is life altering but not life limiting. This proposal also is very optimistic about long covid.
