Singing

I would like to see a return to singing in schools and music programmes. The light voice of children can hardly be considered an aerosol generator and the voices of adults teaching them in this setting is certainly no more vigorous than that volume needed to call a group of people to attention, frequently less so. The inner musician in all of us and access to music for all is being lost.

The arts have a central role to play in connecting with our feelings, more important now than ever, and crucially they have a role to play in cultural development allowing people from many different backgrounds to participate in a shared goal of creating joy. In the development of musicians over time, a vital part of our economy, singing is fundamental to musical understanding, both as a player and an audience member.
