Stop international travel

Stop all international travel for an extended period (6months to 1 year) have a short full lockdown (3weeks) then reopen with as few restrictions as possible, except the international travel. Give a short window before implementing to allow those overseas to get home.

Why the contribution is important

International travel brings new strains of the virus and increases spread. Once we have a short full lockdown there would be reduced number of infected people and less community transmitting allowing a more normal lifestyle to resume.

What about people who have family abroad this is a poor idea. It will also kill the travel industry and then it won’t be just 6 months to a year.

The Scottish economy relies to a considerable extent on tourism. This would be decimated. Local tourism nowhere enough to sustain it.
Many professions (e.g. performing artists) also rely on the ability to travel for engagements. Another group of people you are completely disregarding.
Scotland also prides itself on being friendly and welcoming to immigrants. This means no immigrants could come for an extended period of time; the immigrants already living here would have to go for months or years to see their families. These visits can be an important source of mental health for those struggling with integration and culture shock here.
And above all: no more lockdowns; they are a violation of human rights.

I agree with this idea. It's like pulling off a plaster, short term pain for long term gain. The longer this drags on with the current levels of uncertainty around travel, the more damage it will do to the travel industry. Maybe an internationally coordinated short, sharp, co-ordinated approach is what is required.

We need to stop blaming foreigners! The virus is already in Scotland - this measure will not help.

I don't think we should stop international travel, but we should apply more control to our borders meaning that we ought to test everyone that comes into our country and only allow them to enter (without quarantining) if they test negative. If they test positive, they should be made to quarantine for 14 days. Other countries have successfully applied this approach and it allows for safe travel across borders. During this pandemic, people have arrived on flights and have simply walked into our society without having been tested. We can't control the virus if this approach continues.
