Support for students

Students are the forgotten demographic. The government and universities need to come to together to provide real financial support along with improved mental health and well-being services.

Universities need to be realistic with students facing lockdowns in both privately rented and student accommodations and offer support in every way.

Online and blended learning means working from our homes, support should be provided to allow all students adequate broadband, universities to provide access to any and all required programmes and to subsidise increases in bills.

Tuition fees should be lowered unless the university can guarantee safe returns to campus.

Why the contribution is important

Students are at the forefront of the future and will soon be the face of the working force. Many have already faced 2 recessions under this gov and are always the forgotten demographic.

As the future workforce the gov and universities should do everything in their powers now go financially and mentally support all students.

Tuition fees need to be reduced to reflect the new ways of learning and teaching, no matter the level of competence, the standard of teaching and learning will have a detrimental impact on students.

Many students have had to set up permanent work spaces in their homes at a cost to themselves. Several programmes needed for courses aren’t free and where services and facilities may have been available on campus they aren’t available at home.

Mental health and well-being is a paramount issue for universities to keep on top of and with realistic projections about whether or not students can and should return to campus safely. If not students should not be held to their student accommodation contracts and able to return home if they wish to do so. Rent subsidies for all students should be offered as an alternative to reduce this burden.
