A booklet aimed to promote good biosecurity practice and to assist each household create a private record of a unique part of their family history.

Household Covid Book 2020

The purpose of the proposed booklet is to promote good biosecurity practice and to assist each household create a private record of a unique part of their family history.

The Scottish Government should issue to every household a booklet. It might be named Household Covid Book 2020 (HCB 2020). The purpose of the booklet would be explained in the introduction. A draft is below.

This booklet , Household Covid Book 2020, (HCB 2020) is issued to each household in Scotland with two purposes. Firstly as a medium by which each household can create a private record of their experience of a unique period of Scottish history. Government pledges never to ask to see what is written in these booklets and to stop any body which attempts to apply pressure to see the record. The information, as with any diary, can only be given to others if it is given freely willingly and voluntarily.

The second purpose of the book is to act as medium to encourage Scots to perform and record what actions their household and its members have taken to perform good biosecurity. Good biosecurity practice will be very novel to almost all Scots. But while there is no vaccine against Covid and no very effective drugs, good biosecurity practice is the best way to stay safe.

Good biosecurity practice reduces the risk of any household member contracting Covid. It also reduces the risk of a member passing on Covid to anyone else. It is, in short, in this year 2020, a mark of good neighbourliness.

The booklet is almost completely blank and is for household members to fill in, alter and add and edit as they see fit. It is therefore like a diary but in these extra ordinary times it is strongly suggested the writers focus on these aspects of biosecurity. Simply because biosecuirty is now a matter of life and death for some people.

Because biosecurity practice is foreign to us all, the government has provided the six pillars of good biosecurity as headings and added three sections. The government would ask that householders to consider these areas write down what they as household did and what occurred. There are no perfect answers to each section and no one is going to mark these books. We already know that we have had to change some actions and more changes may well come. It is suggested every time a change in practice is made it is recorded. Thus this booklet will be a form of diary.

The six pillars of Biosecurity are (1) Hygiene (2) Disinfection (3) Isolation (4) Testing (5) Household Security. (6) Spacing. In each section government has given an example, but otherwise it is for household members to fill in as they please.

The three extra sections are (A) Mental health (B) Physical Health (C) Important Events.
In each section we will provide a brief definition and an example. Then the rest is for the householders to fill in with as many examples as they can.

As household members go on line and watch news articles they may consider changing and improving practices. As events occur and members try to maintain and improve their physical and mental health they can record these.

It is hoped that at the end of this pandemic the majority of households and families will find this booklet has not only been an aid to improve biosecurity and so reduce risk to them and their neighbours but also a record of what transpired in a unique year.

For many families this may then be a record which is both amusing, interesting ,educational and comforting. But the government also recognises for a minority of families the events will be tragic and even bitter. It is hoped that even for these families the fact that there is a clear record of what has occurred to loved ones may be of some comfort. All booklets will be unique. They will not be about numbers but will be written by people about people. That it will be about a lethal pandemic and ordinary peoples actions to stop it is unique. But the uniqueness is the reason for the record to be made.

Why the contribution is important

This will be one minor action to improve biosecurity nationally , it should help gain support for the new practices needed, promote a common in direction (but varied in application) approach, promote individual personal responsibility, promote consideration of consequences of actions , promote flexibility , promote and lastly a private family record that may well be treasured.
