Airport arrivals from outside UK

Can we please make sure that any passengers coming into U.K. airports from outside the U.K. are tested for the virus before they are allowed into the country. If this is not possible then we should consider making sure that people go into self isolation as other countries have done

Why the contribution is important

The virus entered the UK by either sea or air from people that had been abroad and currently there are approximately 100000 people coming into U.K. airports potentially carrying the virus. Until passengers are tested and proved to be safe then all the good work done in the U.K. could be put at risk.

Yes, not locking down boarders at the first instance was a huge oversight. I hope this is happening already.

I found it hard to believe that the migrants found in the Channel recently were being "monitored", why weren't they being TESTED?

Have thought this for a while, total border closure should be in place.

    Absolutely agree

The Government's response to allow flights to continue to the UK from Italy,Spain,China etc. is and was a disgrace!!! Always on the back foot,Australia closed their borders immediately, and it worked!!!!

Testing or quarantine of people coming to the UK from abroad should have started months ago
  • Posted by Americanpie May 08, 2020 at 10:28

Totally agree. I contacted my MP in Westminster and my MSP about this issue right at the start of the lock down and neither have seen fit to reply to me. It is madness and this virus will continue unless we enforce their isolation upon arrival. Asking people to self isolate wont work. Australia had the right idea.

we should have had this all along
  • Posted by anniemckain May 08, 2020 at 10:29

Totally agree with this. I am frustrated that airports etc were not closed early on to stop people entering the country or at least ensuring that anyone entering the country had to self isolate. We have had people arriving with no check or monitoring.

The countries who are exiting lockdown have done this...that we haven't is an outrageous piece of stupidity.

PLEASE restrict and stringently test travellers coming into the UK. We do not want to be in this position again in a few months time due to others bringing this into the UK when we are trying to get to the other side of this horrible situation.

Should have been one of the first things done, we will never be free from this if we don’t.

Can't believe these guys are not being tested. This should have been happening weeks ago.
  • Posted by Isobelmcalder May 08, 2020 at 11:50

Seems reckless to allow thousands of people into the country without checks.
  • Posted by jhbrobertson May 08, 2020 at 12:02

agreed - and add arrival by seaports as well.
  • Posted by Greensand May 08, 2020 at 12:15

Close the borders to all non- essential travel. Mandatory testing.
  • Posted by Mwil May 08, 2020 at 12:31

Anyone arriving by sea air or train should be tested and quarantined if necessary
  • Posted by Wulan19 May 08, 2020 at 12:32

After the horse has bolted comes to mind, most counties are doing better than us now. .

Whilst I agree with Wulan19, we should implement Temperature Testing as an absolute minimum for ALL forms of public travel Air/Sea/Train/Coach. This includes travel inside of UK, External in and out of UK - but if Scotland wants to take the lead then let's do it now. In addition, ALL Companies should have Risk Assessment in place c/w Procedures for managing risk and compliance of risk mitigation requirements e.g. use of face coverings, PPE, Hand Sanitisers, 2 metre ruling etc.

Consideration may need to be given for passengers to disclose whether they have had COVID-19 and are recovered, Have been Tested for COVID-19 and outcome (in particular those asymptomatic) and whether had antibody test (assuming it was reliable). Maybe this could form part of booking process for both new bookings and bookings made before COVID - but in any case have some passenger record. It should only be like having to declare some specific immunisations required to travel so shouldn't be a conflict of personal data.

If we do this now then at least we can help to avert further transmissions.

Monitoring at airports & ports should have been in place from the beginning of this crisis. It is ridiculous that those entering the UK are not told to isolate and do not have basic screening eg temperature check.
  • Posted by Joc May 09, 2020 at 15:58

The UK government is suggesting mandatory 14 day quarantine. This is crazy. I don't think it had been thought through. Who is going to monitor the people? It will disrupt business and all other travel just as we want to open up SAFELY. How about the people who fly the planes or man the boats? Where will the people stay? Unless beside the airport or port they could easily infect others on the way to their accommodation. If not monitored, how will we know they are not mixing in the general population?
As more and more people get the virus, people who have been infected will be quarantined unnecessarily. Far better to test everyone and quarantine those testing positive. It will take fewer resources to test everyone than to have everyone in quarantine and monitor them all.

Our borders should have been closed from the very start. I have written to our local MSP about this and she is seemingly trying to get an answer from the home secretary. Its unbelievable the amount of people arriving here daily. Either close our borders or introduce strict screening and isolation requirements. I'd personally prefer the borders closed as you cant rely on the screening and people sticking to isolation instructions.

It is quite unbelieveable that itr is still possible to fly into this country from wnywhere in the world with no checks & no requirements for sekf isolation yet you cant go for a hill walk as this is deemed too dangerous.

Priorites are wrong & its costing lives.
  • Posted by Mattsmum May 11, 2020 at 10:27

Can't understand why this wasn't a priority from Day 1 and not only that, people coming into the country should be quarantined in specially designed facilities. You can't trust people to self isolate, sorry.
