Allow construction to restart

Construction is essential to the economy. Builders are ready and waiting with safety measures at the ready, signage, PPE. Many jobs can be done easily with workers sufficiently distanced and protected. These include painters, joiners, floorers, plasterers etc. Other parts of UK did not stop construction and there is no reason for this to have happened in Scotland. Sites could be inspected by local authority officials. It is ridiculous that a shop like Pret a manger can open but a painter can't paint an empty room in a new build.

Why the contribution is important

As above, it is essential bro the economy of the country to get all possible workers back to work.

There are many householders, ourselves included, whose refurbishment jobs have been stopped for the last seven weeks. Provided that the contractors and householders are willing to work together to ensure safe distancing and segregation, we see no reason why work should not resume. As many of the contractors who work on domestic refurbishments are one or two-person self-employed businesses, we are also aware of their need for a wage.

If Spain had allowed most construction to resume, then surely that can be the same for here. This also goes for major renovation plans too.

Large construction sites in areas where people live should not reopen under lockdown while people are working from home and spending 23 hours a day there. The noise would have a significant impact on people's wellbeing because there is nowhere they can go to escape it. This level of background noise is proven to affect cognitive abilities and many people are working from home.

In addition construction at large sites creates a significant amount of dust and particulates, which affects those with lung conditions and is detrimental to all during this pandemic.

Small scale jobs for individuals are a different matter. Large construction companies were slow to stop work after lockdown was announced and, despite assurances otherwise, workers were posting photos showing no social distancing (was happening or possible!).
