Allow Furloughed workers to do CPD and to ‘help’ prepare for return to work

Relax the rules to allow workers who are furloughed to help their employer develop resilience / return to work plans. Also allow them to do Continuous Professionals development - investing in themselves and / or their employer with skills that will help in the future.

Why the contribution is important

Furloughed workers are an untapped resource to help with planning and development - both for their company to try to survive all of this and for themselves should they find themselves unemployed at some point.

Everyone needs to feel useful and that they are making a valid contribution during these times. In the current age of modern technology, I am certain that "work" or tasks can be emailed to people at home due to isolation or being on furlough could consider plans that employers are trying to put in place to support a revised operating model/return to operation.
This is also vital to maintain good mental health

The first part related to work plans is more HR focused as it is the role of HR professionals to do develop return to work plans. I totally agree with the second part of this idea as companies must do what it takes to retain people and provide Continuous Professional development. There are many online resources to provide CPD and can be done from home, but we need regulations in place for companies to comply with.
