Cycling is great so why not expand it longer and further

If cyclists did not get together or stop then possibly safe.

    Ok if on own

Social distancing is easier to achieve on open roads than cycle tracks. Reduced car traffic makes normal roads much less stressful than avoiding pedestrians, dog walkers and other cyclists on dedicated cycle routes.

Absolutely, cycling does not spread the virus. Maintain social distancing for zero risk, there's no need to exaggerate the risks to the majority of the public. Look after those who need looking after and allow the rest of us to get on with our lives with the proviso that we maintain social distancing, wear a mask and wash hands etc. No need to stop the world for this.

This is liable to raise number of accidents and potentially increase load on NHS.

Good for physical and mental health but requires clear limits ion the distance permitted from home.

Fine, just keep strict social distancing

Typical cyclists, always about them getting exceptions. Stick to staying close to home like the rest of us.

I think it's a bad idea to give exceptions to specific people, lift lockdown for everyone or no one

    cyclists are super spreaders

Should be no time limit, but start and finish locally.

There's no obvious reason why the distance cycled from home should be limited. Cycling alone on the road involves minimal contact with others and therefore little chance of spreading the virus. Cycling is not particularly dangerous and in ordinary times does not load the NHS. Many of the accidents that do occur involve car drivers - who should have been more careful.

Cycling on cycle tracks is more problematic - hardly any are wide enough to maintain 2 m lateral distance when passing, and a much longer distance when approaching from behind to overtake.

Very few cyclists starting from home are going to manage to cycle out of the catchment of their local hospital.

Major problem, most cyclists I have come across lately since lock down can't measure distance, they don't know what 2.5 metres is. Come down to Musselburgh and check it out

If it’s ok for someone to cycle for 3 hours why can’t I drive for the same length of time on my own?
  • Posted by BruceE2 May 08, 2020 at 15:41

I don't think there is a specific limit on the length of time we can cycle for. Michael Gove made a suggestion, but that included dependence on how fit you are and was only a suggestion.
  • Posted by Zaffarella May 11, 2020 at 17:10

There is no specified time, as Bruce has indicated. The only limit mentioned was in Wales which until today (11 May) was 4/5 hours and that has now gone. Michael Gove's "contribution" was an off the cuff response and did not actually address the question posed (I am sure that was accidental!)

The mental health benefits of cycling have been well studied and document. This is a time to enable them that use cycling as their main form of exercise to continue to practice this in a way that maintains their fitness. This will for many will be rides that are longer than 3 hours. As this will predominately be a quite rural roads the overall impact to communities is negligible.
