Allow private nurseries to reopen

Private nurseries/ childminders to re open for paid children under 3, social distancing will never be able to happen for this age range but even people that can work from home are finding it impossible to work with young children that are normally in childcare. It’s not safe to try and work from home and supervise young children, even key workers working from home can’t access childcare as they are working from home. Nurseries will need to find a new way of working for young children long term so why not start now as this will allow many people work / return to work. Private nurseries are also at risk of business going under they longer they stay closed, private children and not funded hours is what keeps these businesses running.

Why the contribution is important

Even key workers working from home can’t access childcare, people need to be able to work as work places start opening. Children’s safety needs considered, parents trying to work from home and look after young children under 3 is not safe. It would also give private childcare providers income to allow businesses to not go bust

Private nurseries for key workers children should be allowed to open if they can enforce social distancing and strict hygiene rules.

There are nurseries for key worker children open - albeit a minority. We’re currently caring for children from all over Edinburgh who come from different nurseries or are classed as vulnerable. If you meet the keyworker criteria you can access childcare.
