Allow Sailing and Boatyards and Marinas to open

Sailing is a naturally isolating sport and marinas can easily operate with social distancing. Allowing this to open would protect jobs that bring in large amounts of money to coastal economies and allowing the sport will be good for mental health.

Why the contribution is important

Positive impact for jobs and economy with social isolation easily put in place
Good for mental health
Good for physical health

This is an activity people can do with minimal interaction. I think it should restart, but the proviso should be that boat users should only go to sea after taking extra precautions they don't need to call out he RNLI.

I agree, and of course any crew must consist of those who are already isolating together. Social distancing in marinas and boatyards would not be difficult.

Not only coastal but inland waters as well

Preparing a boat in a boatyard is usually a solitary affair. Launching can be done by a single boatyard worker operating a hoist with distancing easily achieved. As above totally isolated when at sea. Only risk would be a breakdown but a socially distancing tow would be common sense.

Would help to restart the local economies too!

Marinas should reopen to allow for maintenance of boats by their owners.

Absolutely agree - easy to keep social distance, sanitise hands, don’t share tools.

I understand from CNN that even in the hot-spot of NY State marines remain open and their Governor Kuomo is not daft.

Sport cycling is allowed on public roads with them all huffing and puffing all over the place. Life is not fair.

    CORRECTION

I agree, boatyards can safely re-open respecting social distancing rules allowing the benefits of outdoor activity to be gained. Sailing can also be undertaken whilst respecting social distancing, and in my view should be allowed.

A challenge is how to provide safety cover while social distancing
  • Posted by acwscott May 08, 2020 at 19:22

I agree, sailing is the type of sport that is good for well being, safe as it’s easy to keep distance from others and should be one of the first activities to be allowed to take place.

Social dinghy sailing (rather than organised racing which requires rescue crews, race officers etc) meets social distancing, and is good exercise mentally and physically.

Access to marinas and boatyards for maintenance and/ or careful sailing activity is entirely feasible within social distancing measures. Relaxation of travel restrictions could be on a limited as necessary basis with berth- holders encouraged not to draw on local resources. All supporting future (and indeed current) prosperity when such people actively support local business
