Are school summer holidays really necessary now?

By the time school goes back after summer kids will have missed 3 months worth of education that they cannot get back. As we are all having to make sacrifices, maybe teachers could sacrifice their summer holidays? After all do we really need another 7 weeks off. Schools should go back as soon as possible, our kids should not be disadvantaged.

Why the contribution is important

Critical to our children’s well-being

This is ridiculous. A rating of 1 is not low enough. Summer holidays are part of the contract for teachers and they have been working remotely throughout the lockdown.

The young people in our schools are still working on school work .Many are working very hard and have more work than they have done at school .For the sake of their health and well-being they need their school holiday ... they need space to process and relax ...kids would be disadvantaged by no respite from work and it would causes stress issues and demotivate .Schools prime aim is not to babysit people’s kids so they can get a break ...be assured the teachers I know will still be working and preparing for the changes that will lie ahead for our kids ...

Teachers are still working and teach children just online. I wouldn't class this time as being on holiday. What could be possible is to start the holidays a couple of weeks earlier and finish them earlier than normal and have some extra time in the new school year, though I don't think school will just go back to normal at that point either

Pupils are still doing schooling and teachers are still teaching so yes summer holidays are still require.

Why not bring the break forward to 1st June then meaning that teachers still get the holidays / rest that they are entitled to? Schools could then be pages back in late July / early August when the R rate should hopefully have reduced to a low enough level to allow this.

A compromise would be to bring the school holidays forward to the beginning of June and start back a month earlier. This would allow children who are transitioning to senior school some time to adjust. Simply doing nothing and taking an additional 7 weeks is just madness. Just because it’s in a contract doesn’t mean it can’t be changed. Teachers need to be as flexible as the rest of the working public. We are all in this together. A summer break is not a necessity, we cannot afford to compromise our children’s learning.

Teachers have not been on holiday, They have been in lockdown, providing online teaching and caring for children in hubs. Yes, perhaps people need childcare, but school is not childcare. Perhaps the hubs need to be open over summer with childcare staff and out of school care staff who usually work all year round anyway. School work over the summer is not the answer.
