Cancel or minimise school summer break

With thousands of children having missed out on and still not getting the right level of education standards, the economy on the brink of a real depression and the need to relax social distancing measures slowly to prevent overwhelming the NHS with a second spike of cases the usual school summer holiday should be removed or at least minised to two weeks. This would reduce the pressure on the Government from society to return children back to school in June, it will allow teachers to contribute to the same levels as other public sector workers (nhs, police, fire brigade, binmen etc) and may allow some parents to return to some form of normal working that will only help the economy.

Why the contribution is important

Our children are our future and we are currently protecting the vulnerable at their expense. The right balance needs to be struck and we need to use new measures to enable our parent workers to start a phased return to kick start our economy and stave off mass unemployment.

As a teacher, I have been contributing to the National cause since March 23rd. Every single day I hand deliver free school meals to the most vulnerable children at their homes and help at my local hub caring for NHS and key worker’s children for 10 hours each time. On top of planning and delivering online learning for children in my class.

I don’t need a gold star on my report card but thanks for the support.

I'm working more hours now than I did teaching in the class. I have pupils e-mailing me all hours as some dont have access to ICT until their parents have completed their work at home. I am looking after my own ill family and friends and helping my community hub like most others yet I am not "contributing on the same level". We are striving everyday (including weekends) to ensure your children are receiving their education while they are safe at home.

The point of this suggestion is to remove the barrier (the school summer holiday) that is creating the Government dilemma in considering and addressing the many pressures to return our children to the classroom at the right time. Going back too early in June is a risk. So let’s alleviate that by changing our view on the need for a long school holiday in 2020. Who is going anywhere anyway?
This action will also allow all teachers to return to the best environment, the classroom, that provides the most effective place to get our children the structured education they are missing out on. Long term home schooling will have a detrimental affect on many children, fact. This is despite the heroics of many teachers, some of who have replied already to this post (and I fully respect), who continue to go above and beyond the call of normal duty. (These examples are incredibly admirable however are neither sustainable nor consistent for all schools and classes).
