Construction

Open up construction and garden centres.

Why the contribution is important

If B&Q can be open surely garden centres are no different. Construction can work safely and the economy needs to re-start

This should happen with social distancing rules

With some construction returning in Englad I would hope to see Scotland follow after making sure companies are sticking to social distancing procedures.
I have bought a new build property and hope that its construction can be resumed as long as it is safe to do so. I would hope at this point we would be able to move into this property.

    The agree about garden centres.

Construction is a different thing. It may be safe but it is the welfare facilities that are the problem. If you’ve ever worked on a site you’ll know medium sized job and upwards have a canteen areas

Construction work has been successfully continuing in England without a detrimental impact to the reduction in cases of COVID 19. It is important for the economy, mental wellbeing and to prevent long term poverty that as many outdoor businesses as possible open with employers responsible under existing a Health and Safety regulations to ensure that staff can work safely.

With regard to garden centres, the horticultural industry has a very limited time / climate window to operate with any profit. The closure of garden centres has resulted in nurseries having no retail outlets for their goods and this blockage in the supply chain will result in businesses closing with the consequent loss of jobs, non performing assets for banks and the trauma for business owners who have put heart and soul into their business. Again, good hygiene and social distancing will maintain public safety

I agree that the construction sites in Scotland should be allowed to re-open but with social distancing rules at the forefront, we need the economy to restart.

As someone living with half renovated house where workers can be socially distant except for occasional assistance to lift something when masks could be used. These are very different settings to large sites. I desperately need to co e home from my job as a nurse to a comfortable home which is not case at moment

Large sites can spread the virus to thousands of households. Some canteens have hundreds of workers who can take this home

Construction work should be allowed with proper precautions

Most construction sites should be able to introduce adequate measures to allow workers to work safely.
Home moves are held up by the lack of construction and this is causing additional stress to those affected by it. Shortage of homes is an issue so restarting construction would help alleviate this.

Many keep drawing comparisons to the fact that English Construction sites are still operating and Scotland have been closed. But how confident are these people that the CLC Guidance is safe? On paper parts may seem reasonable. But just because people are working to them does not make them safe. There is a feeling that the workers in construction industry in England are essentially being treated as test subjects for this guidance, meanwhile it is dressed up as ‘best practice’.

How can we be sure that the current CLC guidance is:

    a) Safe?
    b) being enforced by the company?
    c) being further enforced by authorities like HSE?

The guidance is flawed and unclear with many unsafe recommendations, such as face to face working for up to 15 minutes to highlight the most obscene suggestion (a UK government recommendation).

The Scottish Government should issue its own guidance for the construction industry in Scotland. First and foremost it should be safe and clear. Some suggestions to improve safety could be as follows:

    • Staff should travel alone and not share public transport or share vans in any circumstance
    • Limit number of people on site at any one time
    • Everyone should wear a mask
    • N95 masks and goggles for anyone who has to work within 2 metres

Final point. Construction bosses only really care about the money or the programme. They never care about the hardworking boots on the ground, never have and never will. There needs to be enforcement and heavy fines issued to those who don’t want to comply or are not taking it seriously enough. The only thing that will force some of these people to comply is if there is a financial incentive.
