Continue with current lockdown

Continue with current lockdown for another 3 weeks so we can generate more data and make a more informed decision on what comes next.
If we relax the lockdown now we could undo all the good work we had done so far.

Why the contribution is important

We need more time to allow rapid antibody tests to become available to everyone. We can then easily identify who is effected and isolate them.

We really need to start weighing up ALL of the consequences of the lockdown. Just heard today of a colleague whose cancer treatment was stopped and who has now died. It’s likely she didn’t have long anyway, and couldn’t have withstood coronavirus infection, but how devastating for her family.
  • Posted by Kylesku May 05, 2020 at 21:15

Why do you assume it is working ?

We have a higher death & infection rate then Sweden & they have hardly any restrictions.

The point of the lockdown was meant to be to stop the NHS getting overwhelmed not to prevent the virus spreading. We have done that so why the need to continue ?

If you believe the current govt view, if there is one case when we lift the lockdown we risk it starting off again.

100% right. Thank goodness someone appreciates the reality of what's happening.
  • Posted by conniecobra May 05, 2020 at 21:27

I agree. Way too early to look at lifting yet. Better safer than lots of illness that could be avoided
  • Posted by MM1592 May 05, 2020 at 21:28

    I absolutely agree
  • Posted by JWatsDoune May 05, 2020 at 21:36

Completely correct. Should be stricter to stop tourists from travelling around. Would like border with England monitored by Police like the Welsh are doing.
  • Posted by trixie May 05, 2020 at 21:41

Agree. We need to stop tourists moving around for some time yet.

When we relax lockdown public transport must be viewed with extreme caution. Alternative procedures and Restrictions on numbers on buses, trains should be compulsory. Outside of mass groups football etc we are looking at up to 300 or 400 people gathered in contained environments during peak time . Will we be making face masks a requirement when travelling? Trace and isolate under these circumstances could become unmanageable if we do not prepare .

We need to consider peoples wellbeing and think about making small incremental changes. For example exercising longer than 1 hour (which in reality is happening anyway), consider golf and other similar sports as possible with social distancing, families allowed to play in parks (happening anyway) etc. Only by making small changes we can build confidence and give hope to people

The only way I believe we can have any confidence of a new pandemic not returning is to have everyone vaccinated. I cannot see any other way of being able to find a balance between providing population safety and lifting the current restrictions to aid the economic crisis.
  • Posted by Jeannie May 05, 2020 at 23:04

Totally agree to early to lift any restrictions yet until our number of infections and deaths are down
  • Posted by mikecon May 05, 2020 at 23:10

Continue with the lockdown -Most definitely. Not only for three weeks but for as long as required. during that period Test. Test. Test. Provide /manufacture PPE, Plan and communicate When we have Consulted, Communicated, Resourced and as much as possible assured we are prepared in the community and in workplaces and are as safe as possible - Then and only then implement a planned and phased relaxation of lockdown
  • Posted by Dory25 May 05, 2020 at 23:22

I agree that lockdown must stay as it is for the foreseeable future until widespread testing is available for all. Until we know the level of contagion within our communities we risk further spread if we relax the lockdown prematurely. At present no one has any idea how many cases are out there.....test test test!
  • Posted by Dciafardoni May 05, 2020 at 23:29

If measures are lifted too early the consequences on the economy will be worse if there is a second surge of cases.
  • Posted by murrayme8 May 05, 2020 at 23:32

Yes I don’t think restrictions have been as tight as they should have it’s still spreading so please don’t lift it
  • Posted by lindyloo May 06, 2020 at 06:33

Have to say I disagree. Coronavirus is the only illness the government is thinking about. What about cancer treatment which has been stopped. Routine cancer screening which has also been stopped and mental health services which has been reduced. This lockdown will claim more lives than coronavirus itself. The majority of people who catch it have mild to no symptoms. We should be looking towards Sweden as even the WHO believes they have got it right. How long are people prepared to live like this 3 months, 6 months a year. What's the point in maybe prolonging life when there is no quality to it. How can anyone say lockdown is enjoyable when you cant see family and friends

I realise we must exercise caution but there comes a point where that becomes over caution. For a variety of reasons, not least the economy, we have to begin relaxing the lockdown albeit slowly and at different stages so the impacts can be examined. Make a very small change to offer hope to-the public whilst monitoring the impact. If that works, introduce further changes at regular intervals. However, I do think our children should be very carefully considered and should not be the first for whom the rules are relaxed.

Yes agree that the lockdown must stay for now.
  • Posted by jrob May 06, 2020 at 15:29

    Disagree.
Agree with 'lindyloo' and 'grannylinda' above.
  • Posted by Scotelka May 06, 2020 at 18:45

Agree. The lockdown should stay until we have proper measures in place to prevent second wave. Test, trace, isolate!
  • Posted by Mouse13 May 06, 2020 at 20:26

Keep lockdown and be stricter on exercise. Cars should not be used to do exercise, if walking or cycling only travel far enough that you can return home within 1hr. Too many people abusing the current advice, meaning carriers of covid are making it harder to trace the spread as it is no longer being localised and therefore untrackable.
  • Posted by Wildannie May 07, 2020 at 09:56

Agree mostly, but I think some slight changes could be made with regards exercise, which could make it easier to socially while doing so.
  • Posted by HazelAnne May 07, 2020 at 21:24

I have to disagree, childcare of some capacity (family, childminder, nursery) are required for parents who have been parent/teacher/worker all at the same time. I know of at least 4 family’s that cannot take this pressure anymore. Some loosing is required.

I disagree with this idea. The Scottish government should follow the Swedish model.
  • Posted by JLMBD May 09, 2020 at 13:38

If you look at the deaths per million the Swedish model doesn't come out so well. The UK is 4th out of 140 COUNTIRES and Sweden is 6th. The countries that went into lockdown earlier and quarantined arrivals for 14 days have a significantly lower transmission rate. Keep the lockdown for now and gather data, watch what other countries who are ahead of us on the infection timescale and see what works and what doesn't.
  • Posted by Biba May 09, 2020 at 17:49

I agree. I dont think the lockdown has been tight enough to begin with. Too many people not complying with rules anyway. I hate to think what would happen if rules were eased before we had enough test trace and isolate, border control etc. So much to be put in place before easing would not result in another surge of the virus which would have even more devastating results for the economy etc.
  • Posted by bodach71 May 10, 2020 at 12:16

    100% agree.
  • Posted by PRIMAS May 11, 2020 at 16:49

Lockdown is a good idea to start with, to be used as a temporary strategy until the correct safety and corrective measures are put in place. Lockdown can’t be used as long term measure since it will cause more damage to the society than provide the cure, both economically of the country, wellbeing and mental health of the individuals. The window of opportunities during the initial lockdown period should have been used more wisely to put the corrective measures more efficiently in place. Lockdown needs to be relaxed gradually soon with the introduction of other safety measures quicker.
  • Posted by Bek2020 May 11, 2020 at 21:37

I think people have lost sight of the point of lockdown. Lockdown doesn't get rid of COVID-19, unfortunately it is here to stay. Lockdown stopped the NHS from being overwhelmed and in that regard, it has fulfilled its purpose. It is social distancing that actually stops the spread of the virus, and therefore lockdown should NOT be continued. If we have precautions in place to protect the vulnerable and if we socially distance, there is no reason why lockdown should continue.
