Delay of nursery/school children moving up/on

Children should return to education in August 2020. Allowing nurseries and schools time to put in place extra hygiene and social distancing measures.

Due to Covid children haven’t had the transition period that they would normally i.e. children transferring from nursery to school or school to high school would have visits to where they are moving on too ensure (as much as possible) they are ready for the change.

There could be a delay in children moving on, from August to January. For example a child who is due to transfer to high school should return to their primary school in August and transfer to high school in January. This would allow for the transition period to take place. It would also allow for any other issues to be explored prior to the transition.

This would of course cause a delay in children (3+) who should begin nursery in August. However, the days in nurseries for children (apart from any at risk) could be reduced i.e. two days one week, three the next.

Why the contribution is important

I do not have a child of school age and I don’t work in child care.

However, children were removed from their education abruptly (rightly so). Whilst most adults understand the current health situation children may not. Plus they have not had the opportunity for the transition period to take place to ease their concerns.

There is also the issue of children who are as risk. Wherever they are in the education system there are CDOs/teachers who have knowledge of their cases/risks. As we know children have spent a long time isolated at home, the person they confide in unreachable. There could be something missed/not picked up if they don’t return to the nursery/school they were at.

Agree - all primary and nursery children should return to the same class and teacher after summer, to allow at least a few weeks to settle back to school, especially before the p7 to S1 transition.

If the Government is considering allowing P7s to return to allow a transition to S1 then why should pre-schoolers not be allowed to return in order to allow a transition to P1. Moving to P1 ( even if it's in the same building if at a school nursery) can be a scary time for them and a proper transition in place for them can do wonders for their P1 experience. They were abruptly stopped from going to nursery and for their next experience education to be starting P1 may be too much for many.

The start of Primary 1 should be delayed for a year. There should be no intake of nursery children except vulnerable children. P7 move to secondary and additional year S7 at secondary to allow current S6 to repeat if they do not have qualifications to move forward to higher education or employment. S5 to move to S6 as normal. Portacabins - extra staff and investment needed.

scarlett1309 I included children from nursery to school, I only used children transferring to high school as an example.

That’s what I meant by this this type of action impacting on children who are 3+ about to begin nursery. Children who are about to begin school have an even less understanding as to why their time at nursery ended so abruptly.

But the delay from August to January should be for all children.

Nursery children are unable to social distance the same as a p7(p7 also do not have brain capacity to fully comprehend this situation never mind a 4 year old)
    I agree with January transition
