Dogs Kept On Leash

All dogs should be kept on leash on all public pavements and footpaths. Dogs should not be leashed/left immediately outside entrance doors at shops or other services.

Why the contribution is important

Whilst many pet owners have good control of their dogs and can quickly bring them to heel when off the lead this isn't always the case.

During lockdown we are avoiding other people by 6m or more... we should not have to accept another persons dog invading our safe space or allow them to block our way in/out of a shop or service area.

100% agree think this is very sensible idea.

Should be safety procedure in any - corona virus shod make it mandatory with sufficient, effective dog wardens to enforce.

This is daft and has nothing to do with Coronavirus. Dog wardens?

I like dogs but my son is terrified. He gets so scared when he sees a dog off a lead when we are out our daily walk. So I think this is a good idea.

Totally agree. Dogs should be kept on a lead at all times. There has been reports of dogs spreading coronavirus and obviously you can’t teach a dog to social distance. If people can’t be responsible and care for their dog and the wider population then the dog should be removed.

    Agree this is daft.

This idea does not relate to social distancing or coved-19. Dogs cannot pass Covid-19 to humans.
  • Posted by ElaineF May 07, 2020 at 08:24

This is not relevant - it is highly unlikely that dog would transmit infection ie on its fur. There are far more important issues to consider.

We are being asked to consider and be conscience of our distance from other humans at all times in this crisis.

Personal safe space is therefore crucially important - I cannot control dogs who enter my space/block my way.... only dog owners can do that.

There is not enough scientific evidence to determine transmission from dogs... whether or not the animal can contract/transmit COVID-19 is important but so also is the fact that your animal is in your household in contact with persons and materials which may cause risk to others.

There is also the indirect effect of dogs off leash... I step aside to avoid a dog and end up in someone else's space as a result.

Finally... so disappointed to see people respond to ideas posted in this forum at this particular time using terms of 'relevancy' and 'daftness'. Disagree... argue your point by all means... but don't tell others what is important to them is meaningless.

Regardless of Covid-19, dogs should be under the control of their owners and shouldn't be allowed to bother other people. Not everyone likes dogs - I do, but that's beside the point! I can see how anxiety might be increased at this time when dogs are not kept under control and away from others.

This concern may be general for some non-dog owners but it is not relevant in the COVID-19 debate.

Encouraging responsible behaviour of dog owners is welcome. However it is unfair on those owners and dogs who are being responsible to have their freedom restricted, when out on walks in parks and open areas.
