Electric bikes and scooters

As social distancing will have a significant effect on the capacity of public transport we need to explore all options to try and increase the amount of journeys by walking, cycling and other means.

An increase in the use of electric bikes would allow people, from a wide range of fitness abilities, to help achieve this but the cost can be prohibitive and we should look at the potential use of subsidies/grants etc and also potentially an increase in the cost ceiling for things like 'Cycle to work' salary sacrifice schemes.

Additionally I think we should review the legislation around the use of electric scooters which could be a cheaper and sustainable complement to the above, safety considerations permitting. The additional highly portable nature of these devices, provides additional flexibility for multi part journeys.

Why the contribution is important

As social distancing will have a significant effect on the capacity of public transport we need to explore all options to try and increase the amount of journeys by walking, cycling and other means.

As we have already seen from lockdown, there will be an ecological advantage to implementing and/or continuing to increase these type of measures.

Agree with all of these ideas. I think they will be vitally important moving forward and it's also a opportunity to reduce air pollution in the process.

Agree, making affordability of electric bikes more inclusive through subsidy or similar would help a lot more people have the option of choosing an alternative to using cars.
