Face Protection

I agree that some form of face coverings are needed in certain situations.
I personally would prefer a face shield rather than a mask. It would allow the majority of my face to be cover and could be washed/cleaned when required.
These would be better for people who have illnesses e.g. asthma.
Obviously they would need to meet HSE standards codes.

Why the contribution is important

Would provide great protection and reducing touching the face.

I agree. I have recently put up an idea titled protection.
I think the government should have a group looking at designing masks/shields/some type of head wear. I am looking at making some type of shield/covering for myself and have ordered some things of e-bay to try. You would think that in this day and age some one could come up with something that is cheap, easily made, possibly disposable or washable, and safe.

Face masks are causing huge problems in communication for people who have a hearing loss and who lip read. But so do visors/shields unless the lighting is such that there is no reflection. Hearing aids only have a distance of 1 meter and if there is no loop system, I am stymied. I can't hear on the telephone, these new apps like Zoom are no good and take away my ability to lip read...who do I and people like me speak to these days?

I am against mandatory imposition of any face covering /shield / mask given the weak evidence of effectiveness and the problems with people constantly touching their faces to adjust, not using correctly not being mindful of other social distancing measures.

People also seem to discount the difficulties of wearing a face covering with glasses especially for young children.

If someone wants to wear a mask fine but don't insist I have to do it, or my young child

I know that the benefits of face coverings/masks are disputed, but they are increasingly being used by countries coming out of lockdown in Europe, and their use is already prevalent in Asia. I believe that, to be effective in mitigating the spread of droplets from sneezes, coughs and breaths, their use in a population needs to be more or less universal. So, I would urge that the current recommendation to consider wearing a face covering in potentially crowded or busy situations like shops and public transport should be toughened up to mandatory status, with the customary range of enforcement provisions.
    Why the contribution is important
I think that the wearing of face coverings/masks in appropriate situations is important because:

    1. It is beneficial in preventing the spread of the virus.
    2. It will publicly and visibly reinforce community commitment to a disciplined approach to emerging from the crisis.
    3. It will be acknowledged by the our neighbours in Europe and the wider World as a reassurance that we are taking the threats of a "second wave" seriously and responsibly.

    See https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2765525
for a view on face shields being more effective, more socially inclusive.

Re-usability a big factor: shields can be washed dozens of times.
Cloth face-coverings if re-washed too much will lose their fine fibres that do so much of the air filtration work.

The problem is that the virus is in your breath.
On a busy bus, train, tube etc the shield will not help due to the spaces around it.
But I will read the article and see what she is proposing.
