Fix a date for return to school

Set a date eg July 1st and allow schools teachers and parents to work towards a normal re-open for all after this. The working day should not be re written. That is unlikely to produce a result of any sort worth having.

The pupils who are able to come in (mid august scotland....september south of the border) will benefit.
Others can choose to home learn until the government requirement to do so is made clear
eg September 1st

Teachers are likely to be able to toggle between classroom and on line lessons but it is too disruptive for parents needing to get back into work and too confusing for young people who need a routine learning environment.

Why the contribution is important

There is no one answer but indecision, in the face of so much unknown, is not helpful.
Shield effectively.
Support the nhs effectively.
Set a date for schools to be open.,,,the usual working day.
Release parents to return to work if they can.

As long as there is good planning in place to allow for distancing and sensible spacing in classrooms. Toilet and handwashing provision and sanitisers in every classroom. Have teachers move between classrooms rather than students. Remote teaching by videolink. I believe this is happening in some schools in NZ

Not a good idea, decisions must be science based not emotional response.

Children need to transition prior to holidays so those moving up need to have a transition day to prevent worry and stress all through the Summer.

I can confirm that there is zero possibility of social distancing children, particularly young children. I’ve seen first hand, as little as 7 children in an entire school ‘Hub’ and it is simply not possible to social distance them. As a parent and someone who works in education, who relies on childcare from shielded persons (own parents) it will become impossible to have our children cared for in the days that they are not ‘ in ‘ school during a phased return. I don’t say this as my own example alone, but as the vast majority of teaching/ education staff are in a similar position, we face a huge logistical childcare problem. Assuming teachers return to schools for the full week, whilst their own children do not.

Too early to fix a date

My child is terrified of having to squeeze thro corridors and locker rooms and so am I. Any one who suggests a full on return must have forgotten what the bigger schools are like...we have secondary schools with over 2k pupils.
I do not think risking children should be the driver to encourage people to go to work. There must be other ways. Would YOU be happy to be put in a room with 30 other young people and trust on their approach to hygiene and social distancing? And then return home to your parents/grandparents/siblings possibly carrying the infection home? On a daily basis...

In some schools who have the outdoor space, surely that could be used if put into place, outdoor classrooms. Some nursery & schools already have ‘Forest schools’ in place, maybe it’s worth looking more into this.

No . A date should not be set until science shows it is safe to return to school. Safe for everyone- pupils parents teachers support staff catering staff janitors and cleaners .
