Flexible working

More flexibility from employers for home working where possible.

Why the contribution is important

Maintains a measure of distance but allows companies to continue also allows employees flexibility around family and would be a cost saving idea for companies and better for the environment

local authorities and health boards need to look at allowing staff to work locally rather then travelling long distances to work . this affects all kinds of professions like teachers nurses etc folk trvael from e.g. ayr to glagow and the other way, or fife to edinburgh etc etc. it could save massive travel burdens in the long term too. this is the kind of managment flexibility the country deserves. it just need looking at postcodes in staff registers, or indeed sometimes trave expenses claims!

This has to be one of the biggest positives (silver linings) if possible to see it, home working where it suits the role and the individual allows greatest flexibility to deliver based on outputs (achievement) rather than inputs (time) whilst minimising wasted time on commutes or unnecessary work travel, reducing burden on public or other transport, improving environment and enhancing quality of working conditions and home life. A no brainer, at least for those areas of public sector over which SG has direct control?

The line from the Scottish Government moving forward needs to be 'if someone can work from home' they should continue to do so'.

Otherwise there will be pressure on us all to go back into crowded workplaces, often open plan environments and shared facilities with not enough desks to accommodate everyone even without considering social distancing recommendations. Not to mention the increase in public transport use.

This crisis has shown that for many roles the option to work from home is indeed a valid choice and can indeed be a preferred choice. In normal circumstances, when children are at school, this could lead to increased productivity due to fewer distractions , more comfortable working conditions, etc.

As a nation, we need to rethink how we work and ACTUALLY increase the flexibility of working conditions, which up until now has option only been paid lip service to by most employers.
