Fund entry-level employment opportunities for young people.

Young people leaving school or graduating from college or university are now entering a contracting job market with limited opportunities. Many businesses have also been negatively impacted by covid-19, with many having to furlough staff, abandon recruitment campaigns, and in worst case scenarios having to make redundancies. The government could support businesses, especially in emerging sectors, with funding of new starts, especially for school leavers and graduates so that young people are getting to make a start on their careers and businesses are benefitting from having staff to increase there capacity. This could be a funding package for 3, 6, 12 months and businesses can then extend the employment period longer once the market has stabilised.

Why the contribution is important

Businesses need support in building capacity in the next period and growing, scaling and getting back to pre-pandemic levels and succeeding in this “new normal”. Young people need options and positive destinations so that there isn’t a entire generation being less out of work. The government can help create these positive destinations, boost businesses and help young people into work.

This government already puts the majority of such funding towards opportunities for the under 25s, effectively doing next to nothing for those above that age. This is already in place to 2021.
