Future sourcing of PPE and other essential supplies reviewed post-COVID19

This virus has shown us that having a supply chain that we can fully depend on, especially in times like these (which, although they may be unprecedented just now, could become a more common occurance) is essential.

Why the contribution is important

Although the production of single-use, or other items of PPE, or other consumables for the NHS and social care, may be cheaper from other countries, in the event of a global demand such as this, or even increased demand in the country of origin alone, if we don't have facilities up and running already to supply us here in Scotland, the price is irrelevant.

The way to ensure the Scotland-only supply chain's financial viability, will be to mandate all NHS and other Health and Social Care organisations operating in Scotland to source certain items solely from it. It should also be not-for-profit.

The facilities would need to be Scotland-only because of our separate Health and Social Care system from the rest of the UK.

We need to be able to avoid the shambles recent shown in the NHS and especially in care homes where procedures already need to be tightened up.

If this virus has shown us anything it is how dependant we are on “the rest of the world” for everything. While many products do require specialist materials or production skills only available abroad the basics, such as gloves, masks and surgical gowns could easily be made here by companies already operating. It could cost slightly more but we have to invest in our future.

I've been part of a group manufacturing PPE on a non profit basis. Open source designs for PPE are needed and a national register of manufacturers. Far better to store tooling than warehouses full of kit that goes out of date

Lessons need to be learned & where PPE can be made & bought in the UK then plans need to be made for the future even if it does cost more.

Best idea I've seen on here. We need Scotland to become more self sufficient in Health & Social Care procurement. The shambles in England and their unwillingness to share resources is shocking.
