Hair dressers/ salon type business

I feel that businesses which work one-to-one with clients. On appointment basis should be allowed to return to work. Example, barbers, salons, nail technician massage therapies.

If therapists and the hairdressers wore masks and gloves which many already do and used time between clients to disinfect areas I believe this would work extremely well.

Why the contribution is important

client based businesses are huge contributors to local economies. The majority of these workers will also be recently self employed and hit hard by lockdown.

With these types of businesses returning we have vital money being put back into the economy and people can begin to have a welcome step in the direction of normality.

With test trace and isolate in place we would safely be able to contact any individuals at risk.

As a salon owner, the cost of PPE and safety measures, combined with a running capacity of up to 1/3 of our usual, will barely allow us to break even. The risks involved in virus traveling in water vapour, and living in hair makes it impossible for us to perform our jobs without a high level of cover. We will not be allowed fans, so all that PPE on top of summer heat, hairdryers and no air con will be unbearable for us,for no financial return. Please consider our safety before the public’s vanity. Of course we want back to work and want to boost morale, but returning under these conditions feels unsafe for us and could force many job cuts or closures.Haircuts are not saving lives, but may very well risk ours or our families.

It may be one to one for you, but it’s one to ten or twelve for us in a day. Would you feel happy under these conditions to walk away with no wage? I guess vanity trumps fear in a lot of cases.

Much as I'd love to have my hair cut, I definately dont think hairdressers can operate safely either for them or their clients and I certainly would not be visiting mine any time soon.

Even carefully fitted personal protective equipment used by experienced professionals can fail to prevent transmission. It is not safe yet to increase close contact.

This idea is not ''this would benefit everyone'' but rather ''I want others, most of whom are near minimum wage, to put themselves at risk so that I can have luxuries such as getting my hair and nails done.''

It is completely unfair to expect those in the industry of providing these luxuries to risk their health.

I hope to see the reopening of beauty salons and hairdressers early on during the phased removal of lockdown. I think they are vital for people including a massive improvement in mental health and morale and this lockdown has highlighted how undervalued beauticians and hairdressers were. PPE is essential but if someone small businesses would like to open soon they should have the ability to do so and offer the treatments they are comfortable to offer.
