Herd immunity

I appreciate the chance to have a say on the coronavirus government strategy. From my own experience & that of others, there are a lot of people who get mild symptoms. From the data it looks like the vast majority. Increasing immunity within the population is a very important tool for dealing with this scenario, & has great scope to bring down transmission. I would very much support strategy on this. The impact of lockdown brings so many negative issues into play. We need to make MORE USE of the fact that most people only experience mild symptoms.

Why the contribution is important

I support the concept of herd immunity because I think it will help to bring down transmission, deaths & lessen the very destructive effects of lockdown. We need to make more use of the fact the the majority get mild symptoms.

    I disagree.

I think the original Herd Immunity strategy has resulted in the UK having the highest number of deaths in Europe. We should have went into lockdown earlier like New Zealand and Greece did. Those countries avoided high death tolls.

We do not even know if having had the virus offers immunity. There have been reported cases across the world of people contracting the virus a second time.

Herd immunity only works when a vaccine has been developed for a safe version of the virus to infect people. Everyone who can receive the vaccine is given it and that creates a safety buffer for those who cannot receive it.

Right now, we have no vaccine. Herd immunity would mean allowing everyone to be infected with the deadly version of the virus and cause more deaths.

I have always felt that the strategy of avoiding a herd immunity was likely to avoid the need to see how poorly supplied with staff, equipment etc our NHS has been for quite some time.

Agree with original post. To inform where we might be on the scale of possibly achieving herd immunity, we really need to be testing the wider community to understand how many of us may have already had the virus. I understand France now has a confirmed case traced back to December and anecdotally it appears that the virus may have been in circulation in the UK from around then too. Are we going back to check any historic blood samples which may show Scotland had a confirmed case long before March?
