  I think carrying ID is very sensible. Why would one not want to do that if conducting oneself in an orderly and acceptable manner? There was a time when people only ever moved a few miles from their birth place. Local inhabitants knew everything about each other and strangers were regarded with suspicion. We now roam far and wide and no longer have the luxury of knowing who is around us. Surely ID cards are simply a way of reinstating something of the security that we once had.

  Biometric chips could ensure that they are not being passed around to others. An iris scanner, or fingerprint scanner would secure this option at checkpoints.
