Keep golf courses closed for greater good, for now.

Like many cities, Edinburgh has great open spaces but with social distancing measures in place they are very quickly overcrowded and unsafe. It is great that mamy golf courses have been available for families, runners and others to use as a local resource in these times.

So, for now, keep them available for everyone to exercise in rather than just for the smaller number of members to play golf.

Why the contribution is important

Far more people will get the benefit of keeping the courses open for general use.
I know that this is not a great message for the many goilfers out there but a small price when put against the health of your community.

Golfers pay high Club fees for private courses so why should access be given for free when there are plenty places to exercise in all parts of Scotland.

With Blackford Hill and the Hermitage on the doorstep of EH9 why would you need to divert to a golf course. Golfers are being unfairly penalised both in terms of paying for memberships and upkeep but with no access for golf - which can be safely undertaken within current guidelines.

Not only are club members paying for the use and upkeep of the courses and not allowed to use them, there is the real likelyhood that some courses may well be sustaining damage by general members of the public, their children and their dogs. I don't believe they should be closed but, if they have to, they should be closed to all - there are other places to walk

Careful, you’ll upset the golfers with all this sensible talk.

    Clearly not a golfer.
Golf clubs have generously allowed the public to use, and sometimes abuse their courses during this crisis.
Golf is safer than going to a garden centre.
    Open them now i say.

Golfers would be willing to obey rules set out to protect staff that are still working on the course, I guarantee the general public won’t know any of the rules that golf clubs have implemented to protect their green staff.

As someone who is caring for a loved one, a golf course near me has been the one place where I feel I can safely walk in peace without having to worry about joggers and cyclists coming upon me suddenly. I’m grateful to the club which has kept its gates open, while asking walkers to treat the course with respect. Please keep some time available for respectful walkers to continue to use golf courses, even if just for some of the time.
