Make PPE in the UK

Make Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the UK. The lack of PPE during the coronavirus crisis has caused more deaths. The government should immediately take over manufacturers making them produce our own stock of equipment.

Why the contribution is important

The Coronavirus is not going away anytime soon, we need to take these steps to protect the vulnerable people in our society. By ensuring we produce our own much needed stock, we will save more lives.

They already are. It is not as simple as just making. We need tools, skilled work force and raw materials. Those who can are

Agree. It’s ridiculous that we are sending RAF planes to Turkey to collect PPE that is being made in schools by teachers.

We have plenty of manufacturing companies here that could make PPE and could do with some much needed government support.

The idea is very good but in reality people should ask Margaret Thatcher why she want to shut down UK's factories and also...if made in UK the price...?

We should source and publish open source / creative commons designs for PPE and other equipment and allow it to be manufactured as pre-approved products not requiring further certification for the market. This includes community 3D printed work as well as larger manufacture. It worked with the WHO hand sanitiser formula.

Similarly, we should hold a database of manufacturers who can make PPE, even if they don't normally. They should be funded to store tooling so they can rapidly change their production. This is better than large stockpiles that go out of date.

Open designs mean hospital staff have equipment that works well for them and is tried and tested. It also means they don't get the literally hundreds of different designs with slightly different characteristics and instructions that we've seen so far

Absolutely delighted to see that the Scottish Govt has signed contracts with Scottish/UK companies to produce non sterile gowns. The Coronavirus outbreak has shown us how dependent we are on outsourcing production for many different products abroad. We need to seize the opportunity to re-shore industry, support and develop our own manufacturing base for a wide range of products. Any increase in cost would surely be offset by good levels of employment and reliability.
