Mandatory masks in shops

The example is Germany. I would feel much safer if everyone is wearing a mask in places where I cannot avoid people.

Why the contribution is important

Many people are still coming too close, some of them are even coughing. If everyone would wear a mask in closed buildings, we all would feel safer and could prevent infections easier.

    I agree with this idea

Yes agreed this is a good idea. Any face covering would be a useful for both the workers in the shop and those shopping.

I disagree strongly. I think wearing face coverings should be a matter of choice given their limited effectiveness and many issues re safe usage and disposal / washing.
  • Posted by Foxysas May 06, 2020 at 18:49

Absolutely, masks should be worn just like Spain and Italy.

Masks/face coverings need to be changed/washed at least daily otherwise and the science is not compelling at this stage.

I positively agree ! To much evidence world wide in favor of wearing in enclosed spaces, will give everyone more security and confidence to live in the new normal! Guidance would be needed use and disposal

"The science" does not back up the effectiveness of masks. Leads to people feeling safe when they are not. Work in retail and see all day everyday people contaminating their face coverings. People need educated on how face coverings and gloves can be used correctly

I think the advice on masks is ambiguous...there is no hard evidence regarding their benefit and they could give a false sense of security.

Agree that face masks should be compulsory in all shops/buses, trains etc including for staff and in highly populated areas they should also be worn outside.
  • Posted by theresasheldon May 06, 2020 at 20:02

Absolutely. No question. Supermarkets have made fortunes during this pandemic, they could at least offer this plus cleaning the trolleys and baskets after each use! This should be mandatory
  • Posted by NicholaHepburn May 06, 2020 at 20:40

Yes they are an enclosed space and some shops very small
  • Posted by lmg1612 May 06, 2020 at 20:45

No, there is no firm scientific evidence to support the wearing of masks. Yes, if you are NHS or carenworker etc. Otherwise it should be optional.

know that the benefits of face coverings/masks are disputed, but they are increasingly being used by countries coming out of lockdown in Europe, and their use is already prevalent in Asia. I believe that, to be effective in mitigating the spread of droplets from sneezes, coughs and breaths, their use in a population needs to be more or less universal. So, I would urge that the current recommendation to consider wearing a face covering in potentially crowded or busy situations like shops and public transport should be toughened up to mandatory status, with the customary range of enforcement provisions.
    Why the contribution is important
I think that the wearing of face coverings/masks in appropriate situations is important because:

    1. It is beneficial in preventing the spread of the virus.
    2. It will publicly and visibly reinforce community commitment to a disciplined approach to emerging from the crisis.
    3. It will be acknowledged by the our neighbours in Europe and the wider World as a reassurance that we are taking the threats of a "second wave" seriously and responsibly.

I agree with soupy gecko, I work in retail and see people wearing masks every day, touching them adjusting them, pulling them around. Not helpful and lulling people into a false sense of security. It will lead to a relaxation of the need to socially distance. Education is imperative if they are going to be used
  • Posted by Jockd231 May 06, 2020 at 23:07

Why put a face mask on, when the idiots in the shops can't observe the rules in which way the arrow is pointing and can't observe social distancing rules.

Need to consider the hearing impaired and how this would affect their ability to be independent if they usually rely on lipreading to communicate.

The problem with masks (the same with gloves) is that folk then think they are invincible!

There’s definitely been an increase in folk wearing masks or covering their face with a scarf. All of that is useless when you keep touching it. Wearing a mask on your chin just makes you look like an idiot and having you nose hanging out of it is of no benefit! Rearranging and touching it constantly defeats the purpose of wearing it in the first place!! Removing it and scrunching it up in your hand just transfers what’s on the glove to your hand!

And for the folk who are discarding their disposable masks and gloves in the supermarket car park......there are no words!

I Think universal masking is a good idea.

Education around why this preventative measure helps and how to use masks/coverings is key.

I think that for the benefit of employees and others in retail premises etc. it is only fair that the rest of us take precautionary measures. This needs to be couched with the information that other social distancing guidance still applies.

My understanding is that wearing a face covering prevents me from potentially spreading the virus if I am a carrier or in the incubating/asymptomatic category.

This is a good idea and really doesn't take much of each of us to comply with. Perhaps we can be allowed to be mask free in open spaces but whenever we are in a building with others, other than our household we should be expected to wear a mask. This is not just for our own protection but to protect others. A mask is more effective to protect others but this will help with spreading the virus. It should be the law now to wear a mask. We are also responsible to protect others from what we might not even know we have.
