Moves towards nationalising the Care Sector

The Scottish Government should consider starting to bring the Care at home and Care Home into the public sector with a view to creating an NHS like system.

Why the contribution is important

The Covid -19 pandemic has highlighted how fragmented these services are. It has also shown that the private sector is not equipped to meet the needs of their residents or staff in any coordinated manner.

My parents were in a wonderful private care home. It must be an individual choice!

Care home staff do a great job and each home has something different to offer. I have worked in Care homes for over 30 years and have loved every minute. Shame the press only want to report negatives, and not all the great work that is done. Care Homes have done brilliantly, don't believe everything you hear on TV.

My daughter's partner is a care worker. The home where he has worked for three years has slightly better conditions for care workers than many and is a charity but management have been very poor at managing the coronovirus challenge. Late to introduce masks, no training for care staff on their use, no masks for manual and cleaning staff who are still serving residents meals in communal dining rooms, no procedures for increasing cleaning routines., no training in infection control. Care workers should have better pay and conditions with holiday pay, pensions and so on..There should be better inspection of nursing homes. I do feel that public money is sucked into profits in the case of some companies. My family member also does agency work normally and sees many homes which are even worse. But he is using up his small savings at the moment so as not to carry infection between homes. There should be some sort of professional body to represent care workers and they should be required to be members. Few are in unions.

Think this would be a good idea. This has highlighted more differences in levels of care and they need to be monitored better or taken back into public ownership
Some private care homes charge too much

The Care Inspectorate need to start inspecting again or, at least , visiting to monitor and provide support. There’s a reason visits were unannounced
