Only open schools when it is safe to do so

The effects of the virus on children is unknown. Some reports state that children aren’t as severely affected, whereas others are starting to report a rare condition that is similar in severity to sepsis. However, it is clearly the case that older children and teenagers especially have a role in the transmission of the virus.

The transmission of any viruses within a school setting is high: mixing with many people and moving around throughout the school. This makes schools a very dangerous place in terms of virus transmission and I would really call them ‘viral incubators’.

These children may then harbour the virus and pass it on to parents and grandparents: although even healthy young people can become seriously unwell, if you have anyone especially vulnerable with your your family then this is not a risk worth taking.

Health needs to come first. This is a new and relatively unknown virus and we cannot afford to take risks with it. Long term effects of infection are largely unknown but it has been reported that the virus may cause many other syndromes such as immune system issues and increased susceptibility to infection.

I also want to address the so called ‘herd immunity’. Herd immunity can only occur when an extremely high proportion of individuals are immune to an infectious disease, which is usually acquired via vaccination. So many people would have to get this virus for that to happen naturally that there would be many millions of avoidable deaths in the UK alone. As far as I am aware, heard immunity has never happened naturally and only occurs via vaccination, due to the fact so many people would need to both get the virus and survive.

No one should have to take a risk with this. Staff and pupils need protection, as do their families. You cannot take a risk with a virus which is largely unknown - this could lead to devastation and the economic effects would be worse than what would be the case with a longer lockdown.

Therefore, protect our population, keep the schools closed for as long as it required and protect the people of Scotland.

Why the contribution is important

Schools are central to the community. Too little is known about this virus to take a risk with these as they are ‘virus incubators’ and even of children do not get seriously unwell themselves (teenagers may however be similar to adults and children can still get unwell), they will act as vectors and transmit the virus to those at home.

I definitely agree with the point that the children are vectors for this virus. Even if they themselves are largely fine, the fact that we are seemingly willing to ignore the health and safety of the teachers and the pupils' wider families really beggars belief.

We CANNOT allow the virus to spread from household to household, and we CANNOT make our valuable teachers risk their lives by reopening the schools too early
