Only people who are going to work should use cars...

Using cars takes many resources. Petrol station employees, garage services, breakdown services, etc public transport to get the employees who support car drivers to get to their place of work.... All adds up. The risks then just keep multiplying. There seems to be a myth just now that somehow using a car is safer than public transport... It's not. My idea isn't new, but it's important. Stay as local as possible. Rather than putting petrol in or servicing your car, pay that wee bit extra it might take to shop local and walk around your local area for exercise. It's easy to social distance, and this would be even easier with less cars on the road.

Why the contribution is important

The myth that using cars is somehow not really increasing the risk to individuals of spreading Covid 19 and putting pressure on vital resources should be dispelled.

To start moving forward out of this horrible situation, cars should be kept off the roads as much as possible as the resources they use are not what we should be concentrating on.

Ridiculous...if you have a car it is obviously less risky to leave your house, enter your car and make your journey for example for essential shopping...than travel by public transport with other people who you do not know if they maybe infected or not

Don’t agree. If people who can use their own transport did so it would leave public transport for those who don’t have an option. When the lockdown eases and people return to work public transport will need to cope with social distancing and won’t have its usual capacity.

One person driving to work in a car for 5 is akin to some form of madness. Wasteful!

Living in rural area makes using car for essential purposes only necessary.

Do not agree with this suggestion . There are many people who live in rural areas and depend on their cars to make essential trips for shopping and supporting those who are ‘ shielding ‘ .

For us to visit our first grandchild who we have not been able to see because of lockdown we would need to get 4 different public transport vehicles. This is a definite no for me as we could get into our car drive directly there.

Totally agree. It would encourage people to shop locally and to think about their choices to commute. I live and work in a rural area.

Freedom Of choice comes to mind. If you don’t need to use the car and want to risk going on public transport then that’s fine. I’m with the car I’m afraid and rural areas make it a lifeline. With kids you can’t choose what time of day they get ill or have an accident so a car is a must in rural areas.

We could, of course, increase public transport and make it free, removing anyone's need for a car.

After struggling with unreliable and prohibitively expensive public transport in my area for years, I finally invested in a fully electric vehicle.

and how do I and others who live in rural areas get our shopping? BAD idea
  • Posted by Jay32 May 10, 2020 at 16:56

Do not agree - living in rural areas car is essential and currently also safer for those of us who are vulnerable. We are adults and choose to follow the guidance and limit the use of our car to essential travel only but we absolutely have to use it for shopping and medical.
