Yes yes yes!!we all social distance at the dump so let's save the grief of rats and other waste related probems such as ill health and fly tipping.
Set specific times for specific areas on specific days and all attending must provide proof of address .
Once per week per area and household.

Social distancing is observed at dumps and rubbish is building up leading to fly dumping

    This prevents fly tipping

Would be busy Initially but could limit number of cars going in at once.

I think that given that people go there in cars it should be easy to keep safe while dumping stuff. Just reduce the number of cars allowed in at a time and allow entry bubbles Reg numbers 2018/19 allowed in on Monday, 2016/17 on Tuesday etc

I believe that with the proper social distancing Recycle Centres should be re-opened. Many people who are now spending more time at home doing chores and tidying up more than normal don't have space for the additional rubbish and it is clear that people are fly-tipping.

Fully agree with this. It would reduce excess waste currently going to landfill and relieve households of accumulating further waste .

It is perfectly feasible for employees and users to practise social distancing at recycling centres.

It is a great shame that charity shops can't take unwanted items at the moment. I fear there will be a big surge in perfectly good gear going to landfill when the dumps do reopen though.

I agree - and recycling collections should be restarted. I think it is disgraceful that councils have been allowed to stop collecting recycling and to send everything to landfill. We have worked so hard to change people's habits and this has been undone overnight. We should be focusing more than ever on green policies.

Councils have had 6 weeks to work out social distancing procedures. They should implement and adapt now!

Totally agree the recycling centres should be opened. It should be easy to do social distancing. How much is it going to cost to clear up all the fly tipping?
  • Posted by MSLH May 06, 2020 at 09:17

Can’t think of any reason they were closed in the first place as social distancing should be easy to organise — one car in and one car out, and each area/small town allocated a specific day or days for the residents to visit the dump. Staff should be issued with protective clothing (masks and gloves) and the public instructed that staff are not able to help with unloading of cars. Not that difficult surely? Fly tipping is going to be much more of a problem for local councils to deal with.

Flytipping has become as big an epidemic as the Covid 19 virus, our town is littered with heaps of fly tipping even in some of our local beauty spots.

Dumps can be managed or open by appointment only, no need to keep them closed.

If they are kept closed then Councils need to send out Teams to collect all the fly tipping and make special collections by arrangement.

Totally unfair not to offer one or the other, Our country is looking an eyesore.

Maybe even consider having a booking in system to avoid a bottle neck i.e. 5 vehicles an hour.

I agree with this. Moreover, how am I supposed to dispose of large amounts of garden waste without them being open? I have the choice of paying for this service or using the recycling centres, I compost everything I can and take the rest to the centres, now this option isn't available!

Those who fly-tip are, in my opinion, a complete disgrace, but sadly there are plenty doing it. Just the other day, whilst cycling I say two flatscreen TVs dumped outside an electricity substation.

Recycling centres could easily be reopened with simple rules in place to protect everyone!

Minimal risk. Monitoring can use existing security cameras to minimise interventionby staff.

Opening recycling centres should be a priority as the restricted access to many centres prevent overcrowding and therefore compliance with social distancing. I stay in a rural location and have seen an increase in fly tipping.
  • Posted by scottishfeminist May 08, 2020 at 14:36

Absolutely! there has been an increase in fly tipping. Surely this is a public health issue and centres should be re-opened as long as we social distance?
  • Posted by BruceE2 May 08, 2020 at 15:34

It is essential that we can legally dispose of waste otherwise fly tipping will increase. It should be easy to distance at civic amenity sites. As someone else already pointed out, we are already careful when at the dump.

    As soon as possible

Who on earth thought it was a good idea to shut recycling centres? Are they so blind they never see all the fly tipping that goes on when life is normal. The countryside has been blighted with tons of rubbish since they were shut. Get real and open them up NOW.
