Open recycling centres

Open recycling centres. They are outside and entry could easily be managed on a 1 in, 1 out basis.

Why the contribution is important

Important as many people are using the time for domestic projects, especially now that B&Q and the like are open. It is also a time when there is a lot of garden waste. It's not possible to compost everything.

Vital. Recycling is building up and we have no doorstep recycling. I think the local recycling centre should at least be open for people to dispose of items that they can manage themselves. Staff would only need to advise from a distance and manage site overall. Users should wear gloves to avoid touching handrails etc.

Easy to be managed in the same way shops are managed

    Completely agree

Please allow some local council recycling centers to open with strict social distancing rules. I have been horrified by awful scenes of fly tipping on quiet rural roads which is an (unacceptable) symptom perpetrated by some ignorant thoughtless people. Nevertheless, the rest of us have piles of stuff at home we want to get rid of responsibly

Garden waste is kerbside collected by most councils. They are correctly focussing on keeping these services going

Great idea many folk gardening and doing home improvements. Free refuse collectors for their other vital roles.

Waste management of any kind is an essential service.

Vital and I am sure it could be done safely.

Fly tipping is getting worse. This must be a priority to reopen. Can be done safely.

I agree - fly tipping in my rural area is growing daily.

Very simple to mangage. One in one out, and no close contact between staff and users.
Might just help stem the increase in fly tipping.

This is an essential service to maintain the standards that are important in our environment

Essential and we can maintain social distancing. I live in a rural area and before the recycling centre was opened it was used as a dumping ground. This will happen again!

Far more essential than the food van which is currently open on Aberdeen beachfront......get them open this weekend!!!!!!

Agree. Help councils prioritise restoring kerb side and other recycling before we start generating more waste. Make it a sustainable recovery.

This would make a big difference and I feel that it could be done in a safe manner relatively easily. I would suggest that opening hours will require to be extended as throughput will be clearly greatly reduced due to social distancing.

I live in the country and don’t get my recycling picked up. I rely on the recycling centres to be able to do any recycling. Relatively easy to have social distancing at the centres and will avoid increase in fly tipping. I live on a farm and am already seeing lots of waste dumped. A recycling centre 5 minutes away is closed,
  • Posted by Lindawalker May 08, 2020 at 11:26

This should be relatively easy to manage - in the same way as supermarkets only allow in a certain number of people, so there would only be allowed a certain number of cars. To help with access perhaps an odd/even car reg number system could be used? Odd - Mon/Wed/Fri Even- Tues/Thurs/Sat?

    Also establish composting centres!
  • Posted by Themenz May 08, 2020 at 15:15

Essential service...should open ASAP with the obvious precautions
  • Posted by kpm321 May 10, 2020 at 17:30

I agree. Social distancing would be easy to arrange at most recycling centres.
  • Posted by DMS May 10, 2020 at 21:00

Agree to opening. Bin emptying services not fully up and running. No reason for householder to take waste to centres themselves. Should be easy to ensure social distancing.

Fly tipping is becoming a huge health and safety issue with the tips being closed. If we. Pull reopen them on an appointments basis, then maybe our countryside could stay vermin free. There's no control on whether or not infected waste is in some of the black bags dumped in the side of the roads either.
  • Posted by CAN24 May 11, 2020 at 12:22

As long as staff and members of the public can be kept safe and social distances rules are known and followed I think this would be a good idea. Fly-tipping is on the increase due to waste and recycling sites being closed and hopefully by opening facilities, this would decrease once again.

Easier to manage than shops (let so many cars in and tell them which skips to use).
We have all had to adapt to working from home - that required us to purchase desks/chairs/equipment. This all came in boxes that if put in blue bin we wouldn't be able to recycle anything else for the rest of the 3 week cycle.
Also the fly tipping would be eased.

Make all of the skips General Waste and then only allow in 1 car per skip.
