Many outdoor activities and sports have social distancing built in. I’m thinking of sports such as golf and tennis for example, and activities such as motor cycling and hillwalking and (small) group cycling. The argument thus far against allowing these activities and sports is the potential strain in the NHS should something go wrong and A&E or emergency services are required. However, as us now clear the NHS A&E attendances are at an all time low of 50% of capacity, and even the ICU and HDU’s have not been swamped as feared. The benefit to mental health were outdoor activities and sports be sanctioned would I feel far out way any of the potential downsides highlighted above.

Why the contribution is important

The role of Mental health cannot be understated. It is clearly an area that has been drawing much attention in recent weeks by many experts in the field. People must be given hope and purpose and allowing giddies and activities and sports in an outdoor setting must be a good way forward to achieve a feeling of wellbeing.
