Public Transport, Hand Sanitizer dispensers, No Cash transactions

Buses, trains etc to be fitted with hand sanitizer dispensers to be used on entering the vehicle by all passengers. Face coverings also to be worn on all public transport.

Why the contribution is important

This is an ideal opportunity to return to a new normal where respecting the climate is just as important as respecting the health of ourselves and our communities. Public Transport is a weak spot in terms of social distancing. We have to ensure public transport continues to increase in use and that cross infection risks are minimised.
The introduction of hand sanitizer dispensers outside every ward in hospitals in Scotland helped reduced healthcare acquired infection. Extending this to public transport and creating a new normal of hand cleanliness will have benefits for the entire population.
To protect our drivers etc, the use of cash on public transport should end and the use of the One Scotland card for travel extended for those that cannot use bank cards, telephones or season tickets.

My partner is a bus driver and this would make him feel more at ease when at work.

I would add all stores and shops to that list too. This should be standard as this is where we all come into contact with others.

    Stargazer

Can you clarify exactly what you mean by "extend use of the One Scotland card". Do you mean National Entitlement Cards should be issued to those who do not meet the eligibility in terms of age and/or disability? Sorry it's not clear.

    Thanks.

Are we likely to see seats being removed or cordoned off once we start to see a return of more people to public transport?

Before the Coronavirus crisis happened I was a regular user of public transport. The standard of hygiene from some members of the public was just awful. I cannot count the times I've been coughed and sneezed on, no one ever seemed to use handkerchiefs.
There was one occasion where a lady came on with a runny nose, wiped her nose with her bare hand, then wiped it on her skirt and on leaving the bus, pressed the bell, then wiped it all over the handrails that she touched. All this time the woman was completely oblivious to the germs she was spreading all around the bus. Using public transport is one of the biggest concerns I have and I need to be honest and say I will not be using public transport anytime soon.

If you have hand sanitiser on buses/trains/planes, you need to employ a person to be on the bus/plane/train at entrance to put the sanitiser right into people's hands and make sure they use it. This is done on cruise ships. Otherwise, they will all sail past oblivious to it like they do in the hospitals. The buses/trains/planes need to be cleaned thoroughly.
One area you will have a problem with is litter. People bring items on public transport to eat and drink. I do not have a problem with this, I have done it myself. What I do have a problem with is people who after eating and drinking just throw all their litter on the floor of the bus/train. You also have people putting their filthy feet on the seats of buses. An article I read stated that Coronavirus can survive on the floors and on the soles of shoes. This is why abroad they were disinfecting streets.

Wearing of masks and use of hand sanitiser needs to be made compulsory for all forms of public transport. The drivers need to use the hand sanitiser, but since they sit behind a screen they need not wear a mask and it may be problematic while driving to do so anyway. Bus steering wheels and any buttons or equipment handled by drivers needs to be cleaned, especially during the changeover of drivers.
In my experience bus/train drivers are very clean in themselves, the main problem is poor hygiene among some passengers.
Good clean toilet facilities are needed for bus drivers so they can use them and practice good hand hygiene and they need to be at various points along their routes to use whenever needed.Bus drivers are one of the industry groups most at risk, they need the facilities to carry out their job safely. The safety of staff at bus and train stations needs to be looked at along with airports, ferry terminals etc. What is going to be done about safe handling of luggage? Baggage handling staff are another group that needs to be considered.
