Publish Meaningful Mortality Figures

The figures published by the Scottish Government are difficult to put into context.
They should be broken down by age, sex. location (home, hospital, care home) and those with underlying health conditions. Then we could really see who is at risk.

Why the contribution is important

The current statistics are difficult to interpret and there is a growing feeling that the public are being mislead.

Most of what you mention is available from the links on this web page:

    https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-daily-data-for-scotland/

This is already available on the BBC website (where in Scotland people are dying). There is a limit to how many stats you can give the public in a briefing.

Breakdown of mortality statistics is important along with increasing testing and contact tracing.

No it is not. There is no breakdown of mortality by age sex location only total figures by geographic location and cases in care homes. WHAT IS BEING HIDDEN?
The website is not a public briefing? These figures must be available. In this age of technology why are they not being published?

Ok - try this page, which is updated every Wednesday,

    https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/covid19stats

and download the 'Report Week 18' and the 'Data and Charts'. Page 5 of the report gives CASES by age and sex. Table 1 in the spreadsheet gives breakdown of DEATHS by age group, sex and week of occurence, and lower down, by health board and council area.

Agree, more granular numbers should be available, numbers on scot gov statistics website and nrs are a start, but should be able to see how many who died had underlying health conditions, number of health conditions etc. So much fear of covid19 but no real data being made available to understand true reasons for deaths.

Mathew thankyou that is a much more comprehensive set of figures

I fear the percentage of the population who will actively look for these figures is small compared to those who rely on newspaper and media reports, which I believe are irresponsible in the main. While the detail may be too comprehensive to read out in briefings could the public be directed to the above page? Quite frankly these are the types of questions any responsible journalist should be asking, not should we cancel Christmas!!!!
