Quarantine for those at risk

Lockdown should be lifted.

Why the contribution is important

There’s never before been a scenario where countries around the world have locked down the general public where the majority are healthy and able to cope with getting a virus. Quarantine is for sick people and those at greater risk from the virus. The majority of deaths from this virus have been the sick and elderly. These people need Social distancing and better systems put in place to protect them, but a lockdown for everyone is not the answer to protecting them. It is however going to have devastating effects on the economy, which will have a much wider and longer impact on the general population, including health and well-being.

A significant proportion of younger healthy people become seriously ill and die of COVID-19 and there is no predicting who it might be. Do you have loved ones? There is a possibility that viral loading makes a difference and accounts for the deaths of medical staff who were healthy before infection. If everyone goes out as normal the viral spread, and therefore the viral load, will increase, potentially causing more young people to die. It will inevitably make it's way into all the protected communities and institutions because there will be such a high level of viral particles in everyday places. We need the death rate to drop before we release the restrictions. Relaxing the rules doesn't mean the virus is gone, it means we think we have space in the hospitals for you now.

The more we discover, the more we find out that there is no age group that is totally immune, so a premature return engangers everyone in a gruesome lottery of death, or for some unlucky survivors, long-term poor health. This virus isn't a mere inconvenience, it's relentless and not to be messed with.

Once we get ahead of the curve, then we can begin to relax, and apply properly co-ordinated track-trace-isolate. That is the sensible way forward, not some abrupt switch-off for all but the most vulnerable.
