Refurbish old computers for those who don't have one

There must still be many who do not have a computer to do on-line shopping, get information, order prescriptions, do schoolwork, etc. There are also a lot of old unused computers still around, running old and now unsupported software such as old Windows versions, or Macs with hardware unable to cope with the new OS's, which may seem as if the are fit only for disposa. These can be recycled using the various *free* Linux versions around, e.g. Linux Mint, and others specifically built for older slower computers. Linux will run an internet browser (e.g. Firefox), e-mail (e.g. Thunderbird), and free word processing and spreadsheets e.g. Libre Office, which will also open and save uncomplicated Word and Excel documents. You can also use the online basic versions of Word and Excel using the Microsoft OneDrive website, with an ordinary browser. Linux can also be made to look very much like Windows so that people should not have problems adapting or moving on afterwards. If we could set up a system (a) for people to offer old computers, and (b) for people like myself familiar with Linux to refurbish them, they could then be passed on for free to (c) people who sign up to say they need them. Obviously, the new users need to be able to sign up some other say than online!

Why the contribution is important

Gives those who need computers but do not have one ( e.g. cannot afford, or otjer reasons) the ability to get on line for free, which is becoming so important, especially during these COVID times. Also delays old computers going to disposal

I would happily give away my old computer. If there were to be such a service, those older computers not claimed by individuals could go to community centres etc. where they are also needed.
