reopen libraries

Books can be cleaned and quarantined when they are handed back in. Social distancing would be easy, order the books online then go and collect or have them delivered. It shouldn't be too difficult if people want to make it work.

Why the contribution is important

Books are a great source of comfort and relaxation.

Really important form of self chosen relaxation and for lots routine i.e. read before sleep. Agree there is no reason why library with online reservation can't still do this.

I think libraries should be a while yet people taking out boooks looking at them putting them back on shelves. I would open museums first where jo one touches anything. But even museums I would open after sports activities.

I agree. Our community volunteers in Penicuik are giving out books. On return they are sanitised and left for a week before being loaned out again. Even if it's a mobile library with 2 in at a time.

I used to regularly order books online and simply collect and return at the desk. With social distancing and no browsing or other facility use eg IT equipment, I don't see why a basic collect service couldn't work like supermarket click and collect with a time slot, or a book drop facility be provided for books already borrowed and sitting in homes that could be sanitised and left a week before being made available online again.

The Scottish Government should be ordering local authorities to plan for early responsible opening of libraries - yet another example of too narrow a focus in this pandemic by the Government. People need to be given hope.
