This needs to be done in a way which enables parents to return to work as well as to minimise spread of the virus. Therefore proposals such as pupils attending only every second day don’t allow parents to return to work. Alternative child minding in such situations is often provided by grand parents who will be vulnerable or another household.

Return to school should be phased but on a full time basis and planned in step with the return to work.

Why the contribution is important

Only in this way will return to work be realistic. Even where they can work at home parents will be unable to do so and look after their children.

This also assumes a different stance on risk assessment. Return to school will potentially increase risk of greater transmission but a recent WHO study suggests that the concern that children are spreaders has been overestimated.

A full return to schools would also prevent unnecessary exposure of grand parents who should be shielding as part of our progression out of lockdown.
