Returning to school

I think the best way of children returning to school is when hopefully they go back in August, they stay in the same classes they left in March, until the October break. This would give everyone a term to catch up and do the proper transition to Secondary school from Primary, to the year above or go to school from Nursery. I'm am very concerned about our child having to miss out on so much p7 education and transition period before beginning secondary in a new high school. Also our eldest is about to start S4, very difficult at home behind a screen, not meeting new teachers etc. They can do online learning but it is not the same at all as being in a classroom with a teacher and support teacher. The online work is a minefield and takes forever to find files, upload etc. We are both trying to work and home school three, very stressful. An extra term would have huge benefits and start the new school year after October holidays.

Why the contribution is important

I think my idea is important as I have spoke to other parents who agree on this and are also extremely worried about the education and future of their children.

I think a difficulty with this suggestion is that the pupils would then miss that term of the next year instead. It wouldn’t for example allow time for exam prep for those in exam years. It also assumes that there won’t be a second wave requiring schools to close again.

Obviously until we have a vaccine, we cannot return to the situation pre-coronavirus. The huge variation in schools across Scotland will inevitably mean that a one size fits all approach will not work. School and nursery staff are very familiar with risk assessment. As a prelude to children returning to school, local authorities and schools should be given information and support by the Scottish Government to plan their own returns to classrooms. This information should include data about infection in their area to assist decisions about timing. I would suggest that a return to school in Highland and the Western Isles on current evidence could come sooner than those in Inverclyde and Greater Glasgow.

This would make a lot of sense to provide a decent transition period without affecting the subsequent school year.

Returning to same classes after summer is the best solution at least for all nursery and primary pupils - doing this until Sep weekend or October allows for re-settling and proper transition for p7s and nursery children going to p1, without disturbing the next school year too much.

A great idea, as long as people realise this is not always possible for every class, due to change in contracts/ retirals, etc., and the fact that P7s move on, and P1's are welcomed into our school, every academic year.

I would suggest new P1s and S1s are the first to return and all other pupils a few weeks later. This would allow nursery staff/ P1 teachers the chance to work together on a real focused transition and the same with p7/s1 staff.
