River Angling

Fly fishing is a self isolating exercise in itself. Allow local river angling clubs to reopen their waters to local members. No additional traveling involved and social distancing rules maintained.

Why the contribution is important

Angling, particularly river angling is both physically and mentally beneficial. By allowing this there is absolutely no compromise to the social distancing requirements.

All solo outdoor sports, or sports that allow distancing, should be allowed to resume.

Agreed. I have no problem with outdoor, solo activities with appropriate distancing.

People need to be allowed to travel some distance o participate in fishing. this could be limited to say 50 miles.

Agree provided not within two metres of footpath used by walkers and runners

Some members of clubs live some distance away from the river. I see no reason why a restriction on travelling should be imposed. Sitting in my car for five minutes or one hour does not increase the risk to myself or others. Its what you do when you get out the car. Some of Scotland's finest Salmon rivers are a long way from built up areas and people need to travel a distance to get to them i fail to understand how the distance you travel has any impact on the transmission or infection of the virus.

allow rivers and other forms of fishing to be opened up once again, small salmon fishing rivers and clubs across the country rely on membership and day ticket anglers to survive, with that being the only income they have coming in. With no business as such and no rateable value clubs are not able to access any grant schemes, however the seasonal rent/river levvies is still payable to boards and landowners to which right now most like us will be unable to pay, which means clubs won't be around next year and no one salmon fishing.

    Why the contribution is important

it is important for not for the survival of salmon fishing in general and other forms of fishing businesses like lochs and reservoirs, which with some planning, online permits only it is a solitary and naturally social distancing sport/pastime as well as exercise, it also allows disabled anglers a form of exercise but more importantly mental wellbeing. Like our beat it is on a river, permits and day tickets are bookable online and anglers have over 1.5 miles to fish the river without the need to come into contact with any other anglers. Even shore, pier and other forms of sea fishing can all be done well withing social guidelines and indeed isolation without being near anyone. Essentially the number 1 sport in the country and a huge source of income, it is paramount that angling is given consideration to be included very soon in the allowed forms of exercise. For rivers and reservoirs it can be limited to local area negating the requirement to travel any great distance. As a small river salmon club, as are most up and down the country, for survival to continue we ask seriously as in Ireland and other countries fishing is allowed once again.

This is clearly an activity that by its very nature enforces social distancing and poses minimum risk. It should be an obvious one to allow people to do.
