Route Back to Market

Until such a time that the R number is low small independent retail business with smaller retail footprint may struggle to maintain a significant customer base to ensure profit and longevity. Measures to support such as Rent/Utility Assistance may be required further as it expected that turnover will be down by more than 50%. Additional support to help move existing Bricks and Mortar to Bricks and Clicks would also ease transition to new norm whilst still retaining customers.

Why the contribution is important

Small independent businesses form the backbone and community to local areas. With an ever underdeveloped High Street those that do exist will be lost forever if continued support is not forged to help them trade.

It’s very difficult to see how most High Streets will survive without immediate short term assistance. In most cases conversion of ground floor retail properties to other uses such as residential is not practical. The business rates system needs abolished and rents will also have to fall to levels experienced in other countries that, financially and culturally, have been able to maintain an independent retail sector.
