Safety first - keep schools closed

Do not open the schools until it is safe for pupils and staff. To protect staff, pupils and the wider community, keep the schools closed.

Ideally the schools should only reopen once a vaccine becomes available. However, if they are opened before this, huge operational changes will have to be implemented to ensure the risk is as low as possible. Additionally the R number would need to be consistently well below safe levels, and ideally this would be as close to zero as possible.

Why the contribution is important

It will literally save lives

I agree that schools should not open before it is proven to be saw to do so. We can take time to get it right, the kids will catch up on academic work. They will need addition mental health and well being support going forward.

Schools should open as soon as possible - children are a low risk category for the virus, adults who are also low risk are keen to get back to work as financially there is a time limit to how long people can pay their bills and any child or adult who is at risk should continue to self isolate

I understand your point but we cannot put money before lives. In terms of paying the bills etc this is where the UK government should have stepped up more. Hopefully the Scottish government will.

The number of parents who view schools as a source of free child care is absolutely staggering.

I understand the reality that working parents do rely on schools to look after their kids. But the primary purpose of a school is to EDUCATE your child, not babysit your child. At the moment the kids can be adequately educated via virtual lessons, there is no educational need to open the schools.

With all due respect, the comment of Thoughtful80" sums it up: people think "kids are low risk", so it's all fine. And are kids the only ones in a school? Are the lives of the teachers, janitors, cleaners, dinner ladies, etc all inconsequential and unimportant? I really do empathise with the financial struggles of many at the moment. But I can assure you that teachers', etc's lives are more important than ANYONE'S bills.
