School reopening date / School holidays

It is important we open cautiously. I propose we reopen Schools on July 1st. This would give us an extra month to continue to reduce the R number and make sure things are really safe when schools reopen. It would allow more time for Schools to effectively prepare. I propose the announcement of the start of the Summer School holidays around May 20th with the aim of a phased reopening around July 1st. This will allow some outdoor learning taking advantage of warmer weather to assist with social distancing and maximise the amount of school learning days pupils receive in 2020.

Why the contribution is important

Home learning is a challenge for both teachers and parents and is not as efficient as school learning. By altering the dates for school holidays this will allow pupils to be at school for as many days as possible. By rigidly sticking to the existing holiday periods we run the risk pf pupils not being at school for around 5 months which will have a negative impact on their development.

I understand where you are coming from, but how would the thousands of teachers get their 6 weeks of holidays back? I understand that 20th may-1st of July is roughly 6 weeks however if you propose that schools should use this time to prepare then teachers are effectively working. Just a thought.

I agree that school holiday dates should be adapted but would suggest nearer mid-end July for re-opening of any sort. Proper time and consideration has to be allowed for education authorities to manage the re-opening as effectively as possible.
