Schools- return senior pupils

Senior pupils S4-S6 could return to school for their chosen subjects by end of May-beginning of June. By limiting return to those pupils, physical distancing could be achieved in most secondary schools in Scotland.
By only attending for subjects that they will be graded on will also help to achieve the physical distancing, rather than attending school for the full day.

Why the contribution is important

This would ensure that pupils were able to be taught the course in the timescale for January 2021 prelims.
They are already struggling with stress and anxiety worrying about what grades they are going to achieve this year due to not sitting exams. They are now thinking about 2020/2021 course and how will they be able to get through all of the course work and assignments if they are not actually attending school until the middle of August 2020.
The next years course start at beginning of June. These young people could therefore be back to school for June to begin these course.
Online learning is fine for some pupils, but not all. For the ones who don't understand the topic, they may not get to grips with the information being provided on line. One to one teaching is better in the classroom for these situations.

Good idea as children should not have their education disrupted wherever possible whilst also keeping safe

The majority of senior pupils' timetables are full. The number of free periods is quite small for most, so it won't have much of an impact on the amount of time they are in school.

I agree we need to get senior pupils back at school as quickly as we can, but doing this before it is safe just so that we can keep up with the arbitrary content selected by the SQA for each subject isn't the smartest way to go about it. A better solution would be for the SQA to amend the courses for the year, to remove some content, or to provide choices for pupils in the final exams so that they can answer on the content their school has chosen to cover. For example, in English we usually study 6 poems for the Scottish set text section. This could be reduced to 3-4 without compromising the integrity of the exam.
