Short car journeys

Allowance of short car journeys to take exercise. Could be limited to 5 miles from home.

Why the contribution is important

Would give people the chance to see something else rather than their own immediate area. Would help improve peoples mental health and boredom. Social distancing could still be applied, would be giving something very small back to the people with limited additional risk.

Agreed but should be more than 5 miles

Short car journeys alleviate the monotony of being at home, and are essential for people who don't live within walking distance of parks or large open spaces to undertake the allowed daily exercise. Walking round industrial towns is no substitute for walking through woods or quiet parks.

I can see why people might want to travel, but it will add to larger groups in ‘prettier’ locations.

I’m not sure this would work. Five miles is barely anything-my family are all an hours drive away.

5 mile radius in Scotland as a mainly rural country wont change peoples ability to see something different as most can walk 5 miles in approx an hour.
would be better that it started at say 15 miles week 1 and had an incremental change weekly decided by the R factor staying below 1.
social distancing to remain in force at all times

Allowing short car journeys would allow disabled people like my dad to leave the house and see the surrounding area. He has no interest of even leaving the car , just to have a change of scenery for the first time in weeks .

Would be open to abuse and difficult to police.

I live close to a small park which is my closest place for outdoor exercise but due to its size it is often too crowded for comfort and driving to a larger space would be better.

It might be a bit boring going for a daily walk round the same streets, potentially with nothing inspiring to look at... but the difficulty with allowing a drive to a ‘place’ for a walk is that key spots may ended up getting very busy with little hope of social distancing being achieved. Further, if we are aiming to come out of lockdown with a more sustainable and resilient approach to life perhaps we should start here and now with less car-dependency.

I consider this a form of distancing if staying in the car.

I agree ability to take a shortish drive ( say up to 30 miles ) would allow ability to vary daily routine and obviously if not leaving the vehicle no risk

A wee drive into the countryside , still observing social distancing, would help relieve monotony.

I understand that people will be bored doing the same walks every day however allowing everyone to get in their car for a short journey would result in much heavier traffic on the roads, with the potential for more accidents. It would also make all local parks and beauty spots very busy, car parks would be full and there are still a lot of people who cannot follow simple social distancing rules.
